Cyber Security Veteran Training Program

This high-technology education program has been established to enable, at completion, a certification as a Cyber Security Analyst.

This is a 2-year training program consisting of six (6) contiguous semesters representing four (4) phases. You will be trained to the DoD 8570/DoDD 8140 certification guidelines.  For you to build salable skillsets, Trusted Internet will also combine skills and certification with over twelve (12) months of real-world customer-facing security operations in our security operations center (SOC), architectural design with our engineers, and hands-on technical implementation of various security tools and appliances. The training is conducted in a virtual environment with continuous mentoring and coaching.  Components of this program are provided online by Trusted Internet, Cybrary, Fortinet, and EC-Council.

The program of instruction is progressive. Each phase must be completed before the next. A passing score is achieved by demonstrating an average of 85% or higher in the online program. Students are welcome to test out of any phase or prove training to satisfy the requirement (i.e., prior certification, military training, college).

PHASE I: CORE TRAINING – THREE (3) MONTHS

Trusted Internet requires completion proof of completion of three basic courses before beginning the OJT portion of our program. These courses may be taken online, in person, or almost any community college, in the student’s own time.

Upon completing this phase, the student will be a Junior Cyber Security Analyst I, you will be interviewed and may be offered a full-time position with Trusted Internet. Starting salary: $15/hour, plus any additional VA support. Veterans can apply to the Veterans Administration’s OJT program to offset housing allowances during the program.

PHASE II: INTERMEDIATE TRAINING – ONE (1) MONTH

Time: Must be completed in 2 weeks

The student will enter this phase as a Trusted Internet employee and begin a 90-day probationary period

At the onset of this phase, the student will be given approximately 10 business days (2 weeks - 80 hours) to complete Fortinet Network Security Engineer. Fortinet will issue a completion certificate (certification) after each course. Following the online training/testing, the student will be transitioned to the SOC Watch (12-hour rotating day-only shifts; 3 on, three off).

Fortinet Certified Fundamentals (Cybersecurity) – The Fortinet Certified Fundamentals (FCF) in Cybersecurity certification validates that you have mastered the technical skills and knowledge that are required for any entry-level job role in cybersecurity. This curriculum will offer courses that cover today’s threat landscape and the fundamentals of cybersecurity. You must successfully complete the core course and one elective course. This certification is valid for two years from completion of the second course. CORE COURSE Introduction to the Threat Landscape. Learn More In this course, candidates will learn about the cyberthreat landscape. This landscape includes the threats that endanger computer networks, the cast of bad actors who are behind these threats, and the cybersecurity first principles that, if followed, can keep you and your computer network safe.

Fortinet Certified Associate (Cybersecurity)- The Fortinet Certified Associate (FCA) in Cybersecurity certification validates your ability to execute high-level operations on a FortiGate device. This curriculum covers the fundamentals of operating the most common FortiGate features. There is one certification within the FCA level. To achieve this certification, candidates must complete the FortiGate Operator course and pass the exam. The FCA certification is valid for two years from the date of passing the FortiGate Operator exam.

PHASE III: SECURITY OPERATIONS CENTER (SOC) TRANSITION – EIGHT (8) MONTHS

ON-LINE TRAINING: ~37 HOURS

Beginning month five (5), the student will conduct further online training (approximately one month) by completing the following courses. Fortinet will issue a completion certificate after each course.

Fortinet Certified Professional Network Security

The FCP in Network Security certification validates your ability to secure networks and applications by deploying, managing, and monitoring Fortinet network security products. This curriculum will cover the day-to-day tasks related to Fortinet network security devices. You must pass the core exam and one elective exam within two years.

FortiGate Security: This three-day course will teach you how to use basic features, including security profiles. In interactive labs, you will explore firewall policies, security fabric, user authentication, SSL VPN, dial-up IPsec VPN, and how to protect your network using security profiles such as IPS, antivirus, web filtering, application control, and more.

FortiGate Infrastructure: This two-day course will teach you how to use advanced FortiGate networking and security. Topics include features commonly applied in complex or larger enterprise or MSSP networks, such as advanced routing, transparent mode, redundant infrastructure, site-to-site IPsec VPN, single sign-on (SSO), web proxy, and diagnostics.

One additional online course (Student’s choice) (e.g., Infrastructure, Ethical Hacker, Incident Responder certification, etc.)

Upon completing this training and testing, the student will be promoted to Junior Cyber Security Analyst II, receive a wage increase of $17/hour, and remain in the Trusted Internet Security Operations Center (SOC) Watch until the end of the first year. The standard workweek is 36 hours consisting of three (3) twelve (12) hour shifts.

PHASE IV – SOC WATCH OJT AND CAPSTONE CERTIFICATION – TWELVE (12) MONTHS

On-Line Training: ~48 hours

Year two is nearly all OJT, including two (2) additional courses and one (1) final CAPSTONE course. This phase also includes approximately ten (10) months of Trusted Internet hands-on work in the Trusted Internet SOC Watch work. Fortinet will issue a completion certificate (certification) after each course and test (*FortiAnalyzer and *FortiManager); the EC Council will issue a CSA certificate upon completion of the CAPSTONE on-line training event and test.

FortiAnalyzer - thirteen (13) self-paced activities (a component of NSE 5)

  • Participants will learn the fundamentals of using FortiAnalyzer for centralized logging and reporting.

  • How to configure and deploy FortiAnalyzer and identify threats and attack patterns through logging, analysis, and reporting.

  • Examine some helpful troubleshooting techniques.

  • Explore administration and management; register devices for log collection with FortiAnalyzer; use FortiAnalyzer to collect logs centrally; perform a forensic analysis of logs based on simulated network attacks; create reports; and explore solutions to common misconfiguration issues.

FortiManager - seventeen (17) self-paced activities (a component of NSE 5)

  • Students will learn the fundamentals of using FortiManager for centralized network administration of many FortiGate devices.

  • Students will explore deployment strategies, which include single or multiple ADOMs, device registration, policy packages, shared objects, installing configuration changes, provisioning FortiManager as a local FortiGuard distribution server, and troubleshooting the features that are critical to day-to-day use after you deploy FortiManager.

EC-Council, Certified SOC Analyst – 3-day program and test

  • Strong focus on end-to-end workflow, procedures, technologies, and processes executed in SOC

  • Covers typical Security Incident and Event Management (SIEM) use-case development and alert triaging process

  • Covers threat intelligence within a SOC

  • Lab-intensive, hands-on program (60% – 40% Lab to Lecture)

  • Comes with Additional Reference Material on SIEM deployment

  • Mapped to job roles within the NICE 2.0 Framework

Upon successful completion of Phase IV, including final EC Council certification, the student will be certified as a Cyber Security Analyst and will have acquired the following professional certifications:

  • A+

  • Network+

  • Security+

  • Fortinet Network Security Expert (NSE) 1-4

  • International Council of Electronic Commerce Consultants (EC Council) Certified Security Operation Center (SOC) Analyst - C|SA
